29 Jun 491: Reflector Dish Linear-Elastic stress analysis with non-linear contact of a reflector dish, with three dish positions being analysed. As well as stresses, bolt forces were also reported for the design. Although the model passed the acceptance criteria, recommendations were given to increase the stiffness of the dish. 29 Jun 009: Air Sampler 2D axisymmetric fluid flow analysis of an air sampler, subjected to air flow at different flow rates. Particle tracking has been conducted to simulate dust deposition. Recommended design improvements have been implemented and verified by a subsequent simulation. Posted at 11:40h in Read More
29 Jun 008: UTA and UTAMB Linear static stress analysis of a subsea umbilical termination assembly (UTA) fabrication. Multiple load cases were analysed for the UTA with different lifting and lateral loads applied. As well as the main fabrication, a padeye and lifting lug were also analysed in detail. 2 designs of the UTA were analysed, as well as 4 design iterations of the padeye, and 2 of the lug. In all cases, the final design iteration passed the acceptance criteria provided. Posted at 11:40h in Read More
29 Jun 006: Subsea Distribution Unit Linear static stress analysis of a subsea distribution unit (SDU), using non-linear contact. Multiple load cases were analysed with various configurations of loads being applied to the assembly. 2 Designs were analysed with the same load cases, one with and one without side panels. The factor of safety for both design passed the acceptance criteria. Posted at 11:39h in Read More
29 Jun 545: Hydraulic Press A quarter model and sub-models of a hydraulic press have been subjected to various combinations of dead weight, ram pressure, booster cylinder force and column pre-tension. Transient heat transfer and resulting stresses have been analysed as well. It all confirmed that the refurbished press will be safe for the intended use. Posted at 11:39h in Read More
29 Jun 554: Cyclone Explosion Simulation the structural response of a Cyclone due to internal explosion. The results indicated localised weaknesses of the design. The report provided a number of recommendations on how to strengthen the structure. Posted at 11:39h in Read More
29 Jun 005: UTA Linear static stress analysis of a subsea umbilical termination assembly (UTA) fabrication. 5 different load cases were analysed, with the loads in each case being provided by the customer. The loads were combinations of lifting loads from different points on the model, and lateral loads. A plate element model was used to represent the geometry. Although no acceptance criteria was defined for the analyses, the minimum factor of safety was reported, and was above 1.5 in all load cases. Posted at 11:38h in Read More
29 Jun 603: Tank with Restraining Straps Static stress analysis of a plastic tank for vehicles, restrained by metal straps and subjected to dead weight and hydrostatic pressure due to quasi-static accelerations. The results showed that a previous FEA done by a different consultant gave incorrect results due to wrong assumptions. Posted at 11:38h in Read More
29 Jun 003: Main UTA Linear static stress analysis of a subsea umbilical termination assembly (UTA) fabrication. 5 different load cases were analysed, with the loads in each case being provided by the customer. The loads were combinations of lifting loads from different points on the model and lateral loads. A plate element model was used to represent the geometry. Although no acceptance criteria was defined for the analyses, the minimum factor of safety was reported, and was above 1.5 in all load cases. Posted at 11:38h in Read More
